Today’s home is another of Rhode Island’s famous summer cottages. The J.B. Lippincott House in Jamestown, Rhode Island was originally known as Meeresblick and was built in1892-93 for J.B. Lippincott, son of the founder and later president of the J.B. Lippincott Co. publishing firm. After Lippincott’s death in 1940 the house went to his daughter and her descendants still own the home. The shingled home sits on a waterfront parcel on Mackerel Cove and has charming fieldstone details. Inside the allure comes from the original woodwork, and beautiful glass windows and brick fireplaces. Unfortunately we don’t get any of the all-important kitchen and bathroom shots with this listing so some updates may be necessary. it is listed at $4.9 million.

Every condo project wants to be considered “green” these days but some take it further than others. The Aquarius Tower in Atlanta, Georgia is a condo project located near the Georgia Aquarium and Centennial Olympic Park. The 500-foot tower will have a serious commitment to alternative power: a five-floor wind tunnel with about 60 small turbines and rooftop solar panels could provide more than half of the building’s power. The project will also recycled building materials and thermally efficient products. Amenities will include a pool, sundeck, fitness center, lounge, media room, guest suite and concierge services. The building will also have Georgia’s first automated underground valet service. Prices start as low as the $300,000s to the $900,000s and penthouses will range from $1 to $2.5 million. It is hoped that construction on the $70 million project will begin this spring with an estimated completion in 2010.

Sunday I had an interesting conversation with a high school teacher from Mongolia.  How this came about is a long story with which I shall not bore you.  She is in her mid-30’s, married with 2 grade school children.  He husband attends grad school at the University of Indiana.  She teaches Russian in Mongolia.  That’s like teaching English here.  I think she probably teaches the children of the upper crust in her country.

Her big complaint as a teacher of high school kids is that nobody wants to read.  Her students want to text their friends on their cell phones while they surf the Internet.  That is the exact same complaint I hear from teachers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.  In a sad way it is comforting that the problems we have with education in our country are similar to those all over the world.  The concept that students here and there don’t understand is that those who read keep the electricity on.  What do you do if the electricity goes out?
