The last few days I’ve been having Internet problems - s…l…o…w… to the extreme - losing packets, timing out. Pure frustration.
It made me think about Jim’s post about retirement and loneliness. We depend on the Internet so much for our connections to the world around us, that when it is slowed or stopped we don’t know what to do. I use email more than my cell phone these days to connect with my children; it’s far easier than playing phone tag, but occasionally I do like to hear their voices.
Baby boomers were the first Television generation, and certainly we’re much more likely than our parents to use the Internet for communication. We tried to get my mother-in-law to use a mail station with limited success.
Our connections to the world in retirement will rely heavily on the World wide web, both for communication and jobs.
Will we be able to continue to expect growth and prosperity with the www? or will it be replaced by something new?
