Envision owning your own ancient Italian monastery. Antico Monastero is an old monastery dating back to the 13th Century. It is located on the top of a hill in the countryside around Perugia. It has been restored into a luxury accommodation. There are 11 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms as well as an owner’s apartment with a reception room, studio, kitchen, water closet and two bedrooms. There’s also an old church, and stables which have been converted into a restaurant with professional kitchen. The restoration preserved the original structure with its arches and vaulted ceilings and used original materials, like terracotta and stone to pave the floors and wood for most of the furniture to maintain the consistent look of the property. The land includes both chestnut woods and pasture land. It is listed at 2.3 million euros.

This New York City co-op is located at 77 Bleecker St is three levels and has some great open spaces. The great room has high ceilings, three exposures, and a wood-burning fireplace. The open kitchen adjoins a dining conservatory. The home is configured as three bedrooms plus a large home studio. The master bedroom suite includes a master bath, dressing room with a skylight and laundry, and its own private south-facing terrace. The innovative windows (I love the circular window in the bathroom) make this home a step above the generic white box apartment. It is listed at $4.995 million.

Interesting article in today’s WSJ about vultures buying condos in Miami; interesting on two points.

First, the article implied that a buyer shouldn’t anticipate the same good deal from new condo towers built side by side, because the builders cost are different depending on if they were started before or after the last massive hurricane season.  As a buyer, I don’t care what the seller paid for anything.  The market dictates the price.  That’s why people are so angry at builders who are discounting houses 30% below the selling price two years ago.  Selling price of real estate is dictated by the selling price of recently sold real estate, not the cost of the property in question.

Second, the WSJ showed a picture of high-rise condo buildings along Miami’s beach front.  The density of the units on the beach is startlingly high.  Unless, I’m coming from a high density residential area, I don’t see why I would want to buy a vacation or retirement unit in such a crowded area.  Even if I come from a high density residential area, I don’t see it the desirability of a crowded area.  Like my dad used to say, “Why do I want to hang around with a bunch of old people?”

The Pink Palace isn’t pink any more but the mansion in Atlanta’s Buckhead area retains the name from the time when it was pink. The mansion was built in 1926 for the Rhodes Furniture family and is a six-bedroom stucco Italian Baroque-style home on four acres at the corner of West Paces Ferry and Tuxedo roads. The home was designed by Atlanta architects Neel Reid and Philip Schutze and has big public rooms designed for grand entertaining. The murals are completely dazzling. What makes this one even more interesting is the renovation. it has been remodeled so that it runs on geothermal energy (turning a $6500 a month energy bill into an apartment-sized $150). They removed 18 layers of lead paint from the doors, windows and walls and all doors and door frames were removed, made square, and put back in. The attic on top of the sun room and family room was changed turning the ceilings/roofs into floors. The servants quarters were transformed into larger living space. It’s an odd mix, you’ve rooms that are typically old South, grand and ornate, but you also have light-filled modern spaces with clean lines. The graceful renovation made the home modern and sustainable but managed to maintain its original style in the original rooms. At $20 million it’s the most costly listing in Atlanta.

When we think of “cleaning up” one’s social networking profile, we often restrict this to business sites like LinkedIn. However, nowadays, many experts are recommending that you also polish your Facebook profiles.

And why shouldn’t you? Odds are, potential employers and business contacts could be looking at it (see this article from CBS News for more info). Here are some tips on how to evaluate your Facebook profile for corporate purposes:

Review all your displayed photographs.  Make sure that no humiliating photos are in public view. This includes exposing your beer belly, dancing in a nightclub in a skimpy outfit, or even running around in your diapers.  Sure, you can still post those photos - but customize the settings.  Only let a few, trusted people see photographs of questionable content.

Reduce clutter.  Are 200 applications on your profile absolutely necessary?  Make sure you only keept he essentials visible.  You can have some fun and place non-business applications on your profile - just be choosy as to what those applications are.  Putting “Panty Raid” and “Dope Wars” on your profile might not be your best bet.

Don’t write like an illiterate 12 year old.
Do your wall messages or profile phrases include this: “LOLZ!” “Zup wit u!” etc.?  While you can do that on private messages with your friends, good written communication skills are required for most jobs.  If a future employer sees you writing like that, it might be a turn off.

Shorten the URL.  Notice how your Facebook profile address has lengthy numbers you can’t memorize?  This makes sharing your profile a bit harder to do.  Try using go2fb to shorten your profile URL.

Based only on what you see on your profile, step inside a potential employer’s shoes for a second and ask yourself, “Is this person worth hiring?”
