For the next couple of weeks we’ll be checking out some homes in the most costly zip codes in the United States, up today, 48304 . This zip code refers to the town of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. This zip code has a median price of $1,180,000 with an appreciation rate of 113% since 1990. Bloomfield Hills was recently in the news when one of the homes that Aretha Franklin owns in the Detroit suburb was slated for foreclosure due to failure to pay back taxes.

A while back I mentioned a $14.75 million home in Bloomfield Hills that was being built by Sally Russell Building Company. Today’s home is another lavish Sally Russell build. The work on this project began in 2002. The home is a Tudor on steroids, an impressive build that has turrets, leaded glass windows, and details like walnut and oak floors hand scraped to appear aged and marble and stone floors that have also been treated to have the patina of age.

Originally, a 1917 Spanish-style house occupied the lot, it was torn down but two crystal chandeliers, wrought iron pieces, the original front door, a pine cabinet and Pewabic tiles were all salvaged and incorporated into the new home. This property has six bedrooms, a gourmet kitchen, lower level wet bar, elevator, exercise room, sauna, steam shower, guest quarters, au pair suite, theater, game room, an outside fountain, hot tub, pool and a heated storage room under the terrace for winter furniture storage. This home is on three acres and is listed at $9,900,000.

I’ve mentioned before that the real estate auction market in Florida is heating up as more and more people need to get rid of houses in a hurry. Now some of the biggest newest mansions are hitting the black at reduced prices. Case in point, this 12,000-square-foot home in Jupiter, Florida. This five-bedroom overlooks the Loxahatchee river and has a 125-foot dock with 160 feet of water frontage. The property also includes a three two-car garages, a two-bedroom guesthouse and there is a massive pool overlooking the river and a gazebo with an outdoor kitchen and barbecue. Inside it’s classic Florida gigantic with a double-height foyer with a big chandelier and marble staircase with wrought-iron railings. The home has a massive gourmet kitchen, octagonal breakfast room, master suite with a private balcony. The home was listed at $6,995,000 but a court order has forced an auction at $4.5 million or lower on April 19.

Now that we’ve discussed yoga to keep your body in tune, what are you doing to keep your mind sharp? As I discussed in previous posts, the ‘use it or lose it’ philosophy is totally true.

Amy Sherman, LMHC, writes about maintaining cognitive (brain) function. She says many baby boomers are learning languages, taking on new hobbies (like quilting, in my case, or playing the guitar), and participating in “thought-provoking discussions.” I took the “brain speed test” and the “word recall test” at Posit Science, and scored pretty well, for someone over 60. Must be all that personal time and blogging. If you try these, let me know what you think.

So what are you doing to keep your brain active?
