Donald Trump opened his latest Las Vegas property on Friday at a ribbon slicing surrounded by beauty queens and fellow developers. The Trump International Hotel & Tower is a 64-story gold-covered with 1,282 suites and a restaurant named DJT (Trump’s initials). The new tower joins other new towers which have luxury accommodations, dining and retail but no casinos.

All isn’t rosy in Trumpland though, shares of Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc. hit an all-time low on Friday after the company’s three casinos reported lower revenue for March. Trump’s share price is down 83 percent for the past 52 weeks. Also, Trump Entertainment issued a statement last week saying they would sell a casino or two if they thought the sale would be in the ideal interest of the shareholders.

Trump has stated he will wait to build a second planned Las Vegas high rise until he sells all the condo and hotel units in the first tower.

I’m inspired by those who grow their own vegetables and raise their own chickens but I’m not cut out for farm life. For those like me who might want to stick a toe into the sustainable life without opting for their own farm, a new condo in Northeast Portland, Oregon might be a way to start. The Columbia Ecovillage is part of the Portland Permaculture Institute which offers classes on sustainable living. A former apartment complex is being turned into 37 condos next to a 1912 farmhouse which will be a common building for the condos. This complex will be more of a community, residents will cultivate some of their own food and share some meals in the farmhouse. It will be a co-housing community. The prices are pretty low: studios to three bedrooms, will run $145,500 to $329,500. Reservations will be taken starting in Might with move-in scheduled for the end of this year.

Is this part of a trend? Bankrate recently had an interesting piece on the new-found popularity of commune-like situations. As the Baby Boomers age they’re looking for a sense of community and communes are one possible answer, offering both shared resources and shared experience.

I’ve never seen anything like this. My guess is that there over 10,000 women (all menopausal or post-menopausal) and 17 men at the Quilt Festival in Chicago at the Rosemont Convention Center. Unbelievable. The traffic getting there was backed up for miles, with many buses from all over the Midwest, and groups of women in vehicles. And the venue was packed with women buying fabric, and tools, and big-ticket items like long-arm quilting machines.

Anyone who says quilting isn’t a big industry (and I do mean “industry”) needs to see one of these quilt shows. The women making the quilts, and running the quilt shops, and making things quilters need, and selling the books and quilt machines are making money.

By the way, the quilts are beautiful art work; not just your grandmother’s patchwork. If you’re at all interested in quilting, attend a quilt show. The REALLY BIG one is coming up later this month in, of all places, Paducah, Kentucky, the home of the American Quilter’s Society. As I heard from some of the Chicago attendees, the Paducah show includes the entire town, and it sounds great. Don’t bother trying to make reservations, though; they whole town is sold out for the week of the show.

“A Place for Mom” bills itself as “the nation’s largest elder care referral service.” Their mission is to help the elderly and their families find the best solution to eldercare needs and they have over 200 advisers.  Since they appear to offer these services without cost, I wondered how they get money.  They state, “Our consultation is provided at no cost to families, as many communities reimburse us for our services.”

They have a nice resource section on their website that you might find useful.
