For the next couple of weeks we will be checking out some homes in the most pricey zip codes in the United Says, up this day, 96816 . This zip code is the only one we’ll feature outside of the continental 48 states, it is located in Honolulu, Hawaii. This particular area with plenty of waterfront property has a median price of $2,090,000 and an appreciation rate of 250% since 1990.

Hawaii is an pricey place to live but views like the ones from this home are part of the reason people are willing to spend the money. Today’s home is in the Kahala neighborhood which we’ve covered before in estate of the days because it is a particularly lovely place to live. This home is a 2004 restoration and remodel of a past celebrity-owned residence. The home has prized Koa wood trim and Ohia flooring and a dramatic rock fireplace. The most alluring part of this home are the glass walls facing the dramatic ocean vistas. The home has only two bedrooms but over 4,000 square feet of space including one of the most fantastic views from a bathtub I’ve ever seen. This home is listed at $10.8 million.

You’ve installed them all - Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, Skype, Google Speak, etc. Now, if you’re very popular (or you just have annoying contacts) you find that you get interrupted by instant messages constantly. Some of the messages are essential, while others can wait. How do you filter out the distractions while remaining accessible for emergencies?

Take advantage of selective invisible or stealth modes.  Most instant messengers allow you to selectively block contacts from seeing you. Use this feature as much as possible. While you’re working, temporarily block out your annoying cousin, while remaining visible to your boss who might need you.

Use status messages wisely.   While you can be invisible to people who have nothing to do with your work, the few people you’re visible to might abuse their “power”.  You’re busy working on something, but since your colleague Joe can see you’re on the internet, he’ll message you about the latest office gossip.  You want to be there for Joe because of a project you’re working on together, but you don’t want to be disturbed for something unimportant.  This is where status messages come in.

If there’s an icon for “busy” or “do not disturb”, use it.  Also, modify your status message to say something like “Working on Project X, please send ONLY relevant mssgs. For other queries, please email.” - or whatever applies.

Use an all-in-one messaging system.  It’s a bit confusing (and too colorful) to use so many messaging programs at once.  Use programs that grant you to access all your isntant messaging accounts from one interface.  Examples of such programs: Pidgin, Miranda IM, and Trillian.

Remove unnecessary notifications.  When someone sends you an instant message, the most common notification is that the conversation window flashes on top, the task bar lights up like a Christmas tree (or menorah, take your pick), and a chime plays.  You don’t need all that.  Limit it to the bare minimum setting you can find, and remove the option to have the conversation window come up on top of your other windows.  You should be the one in control of when you will read/access your instant messages, not the sender.  Look for the “Preferences” or “Options” menu in your instant messenger to tinker with these settings.

Train people to use email.   Sometimes, an entire chat will eat up your time.  If that happens, cut it short and tell the other person to just email you about it.  That way, you can respond properly without letting the conversation disturb your work.  Tell people that this will help you focus your undivided attention on them.  After all, it’s much superior than shifting from work to chatting and back again.

I’ve used these tips with success for the past few months.  Are there any special techniques you use to limit instant messaging distractions?  Share them with us in the comments.

I spent a busy day today, but got little done. This is because I’m at last becoming perfect in the art of seeming busy, even when very tiny is going on in my head or under my hands. This is an art which every man learns, if he does not intend to work himself to death.

The Business Channel bloggers are scrambling, as in writing posts for each other’s blogs. As I was writing a post about Home Office Deductions for HomeBizNotes, Miki Saxon of LeadershipTurn concurred to write a guest post for us:

youtubegeneration1.JPGOh, you Boomers. You’ve moved through the decades changing everything as you passed only to be accused by your Gen Y offspring of being ossified, calcified and petrified.

But if you look closely, you’ll see that much of those vaunted differences are just plain, old horsepucky. Here’s a list of attitudes (spelling corrected) that Millennials just won’t tolerate in their bosses (annotations in parentheses are mine).

  • Inflexibility.
  • Judgmental attitudes.
  • Close-mindedness.
  • Fear of and an unwillingness to use technology.
  • Unwillingness to listen to and respect Gen Y’s views, ideas and views. (Respect doesn’t mean agreement.)
  • Intimidation.
  • Being told they have to “pay their dues”. (The skills, experience and ability to do the job are what’s required.)
  • Lack of professional and leadership development through the company. (Based on what the company can afford.)
  • Emphasis on traditional dress (coat or suit and tie are out). (Depends-sales reps don’t make presentations in jeans, nor do lawyers go to court in them.)
  • Lack of intellectual horsepower. (Relative to whom?)

Well duh. Show me anybody who appreciates these attitudes. Moreover, show me a manager who practices them and I’ll show you a group with low productivity and high turnover.

Every generation is different. Each generation believes that they know best, that they’re right and that anybody who has been around long enough to run things doesn’t/can’t/won’t understand.

The greatest thing about age in the Twenty-first Century is that it’s defined by MAP (mindset, attitude, philosophyTM), rather than chronology-in other words, it’s not the calendar, but the way you think that counts.

(Humor prevents a ‘hardening of the attitudes.’ - Joel Goodman)

Get your friends together and sponsor a “Baby Boomer Job Fair” - use the one in Golden, Colorado as inspiration.  This is the second year for the “BOOM-A-FAIR” - it is being held April 22 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.  I wonder what kinds of jobs are available  - I hope “Wal-Mart Greeter” isn’t one of them.

What kind of job would you look for at a Boomer Job Fair?
