NeighborhoodScout.com has used their matching function to find neighborhoods that are “discount equivalents” of some of the hot and high-priced communities we recently covered in our Most High-priced Zip Codes estates.

It’s getting increasingly hard to afford the Hamptons but if you head to Mattituck, New York on Long Island in New York there are still some deals to be found. Whereas the median price in the Hamptons is $1.38 million, in Mattituck the median price is $525,307. The area was once used predominantly for farming but is now prime real estate. You won’t find the same celebrity power that you do in the Hamptons but you won’t have to pay $65 million either. Today’s home sits on a bluff 95 feet above Long Island Sound. It has breathtaking views which are showcased through the floor-to ceiling windows. There are five bedroom suites, a massive formal living room and an an office. It has a big basement that can be used as a game room or for entertaining. Outside there’s a custom gunite pool and a covered patio. This home is listed at $3.4 million.

We’ve seen some big estates sell in Malibu but how much would you pay for just the land? A huge chunk of Malibu land has gone on sale for an astronomical price. This 1,280 acres of land has ocean views and beach frontage along Pacific Coast Highway and is broken into 29 parcels. The listing says “they don’t don’t make land like this anymore.” Certainly not this close to Los Angeles they don’t. I’m just hoping someone doesn’t clutter up this spot with too many houses, it’s one of my favorite unspoiled spots along PCH. It is listed at $130 million.

Which U.S. states are best and worst for small businesses? The Small Business and Enterprise Council has published a ranking of states in their friendliness for small businesses.

The friendliest states: 1)South Dakota, 2)Nevada, 3)Wyoming, 4)Washington, 5)Florida. The worst: 47) Iowa, 48) California, 49) Minnesota, 50) New Jersey, and 51) District of Columbia.

I have lived in Iowa for over 20 years, to I figure I’m an Iowan (or “Hawkeye,” I guess.)  But I was not aware that Iowa ranked so low in business friendliness.  Maybe I should move to Florida.
