No one seems to know whether they are buying or leasing but various sources concur that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are settling into a chateau on the French Riviera. This is no surprise, the couple has been looking at various spots in the region for at least a year. Now they’ve reportedly settled into Chateau Miraval, a $70 million estate in the little village of Brignol in the Var. The big estate includes a castle with 35 bedrooms, perfect for all the kids and the entourage as well as 20 fountains, aqueducts, a lake, a swimming pool, and a thriving vineyard. It’s also surrounded by a big forest and has a three mile driveway offering this couple the most valued feature of all, privacy.

This month’s contest on the Business Channel at b5media is about “taking chances.” I’m ready to take the chance, to “retire” and work full-time from home.
Have you thought about “retiring” and starting a new business, at home or elsewhere?

There is a lot of fear associated with massive life changes, like changing jobs, starting a business, being at home (with your spouse!). What is stopping you? What are you waiting for? Being terrified isn’t an excuse.

What is the FIRST STEP you need to take - the “throw your hat over the fence so you’ve to go over and get it” step?

Nashville, Tennessee is seeing a lot of lavish new builds. Today’s estate is one of the most pricey new houses in the area. The Mediterranean-style home is 20,000 square feet positioned on 8.5 acres in the Bancroft area of Forest Hills. A lot of newer homes lack charm but this one with its beautiful hardwood floors and gracious lines is really something special. The kitchen is large enough to film a cooking show and looks like you could actually cook in it. There’s an ample exercise room and a large garage which seems to currently serve as some sort of playroom. While the home theater is the usual study in boring beige there’s a fantastic office that is open to the floor above. There are seven bedrooms total. It is listed at $6.9 million which is very high for the area but a big discount considering it was once listed at $8.99 million.

The Lone Star Say, which was part of Mexico until 1836, is not particularly known for its architectural treasures. There are some astounding estates scattered among its vast tracts, however, as author Lisa Germany and photographer Allow Mudford reveal in their excellent new book, Great Houses Of Texas (Abrams, $50). The Texan landscape — “combined with the larger-than-life personalities who were drawn to the brutal hardships of the frontier and the architects who designed these amazing homes” — is the unifying theme of the 25 houses, ranging from the intimate to the ornate, collected in the book. Among them is the beautiful Crespi Mansion in Dallas, designed by Swiss architect Maurice Fatio in 1939, pictured above; and the Nowlin Home in Austin designed by Paul Lamb in 2002, which was partially based on Mayan ruins. Back in the early 1920s, J.R. Simplot started a business in Declo, Idaho — he raised hogs. He was 14-years old. Ultimately, he went on to create the Simplot Company, which is now a multi-billion dollar enterprise.

Yesterday, Simplot died of natural causes; he was 99.

He lived his life to the fullest and it seemed he’d limitless energy. During World War II, the Simplot Company was the largest seller of potatoes in the U.S. and, of course, a major supplier to the troops.

Simplot also was incredibly innovative. For example, when there was a fertilizer shortage in WW II, he created his own facility to deal with the problem. Then, by the late 1940s, he helped to invent frozen french fries and would help usher in the fast-food revolution. By 1967, he made a hand-shake deal with Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD), to supply french fries.

Although he retired in the early 1970s, Simplot remained busy. He provided startup capital to personal chip maker Micron Technology (NYSE: MU). The company now has a market value of $6.2 billion.

Despite all the success, Simplot remained humble and thrifty - just like another billionaire, Warren Buffett. Simplot would fly commercial, had an ordinary vehicle and wore the same pair of glasses for thirty years. And of course, his favorite restaurant was McDonald’s.
