When faced with a property with an impossibly hefty price tag we have to ask the question is it worth it? This one seems pretty promising. It’s a 25-room red brick residence with 100ft of frontage along Park Avenue and situated between 64th and 65th Street in one of New York City’s prime neighborhoods. The home was built in 1920 but has been renovated with new heating and air conditioning, a mechanical elevator, security and electrical systems. The home has southern and western exposures and views onto Park Avenue. There is a sunny yellow chef’s kitchen and pantry, five massive bedrooms, big formal rooms for entertaining, many staff rooms, a laundry, a wine room, a play room and space for a lavish home theater. Older touches of charm include the wood burning fireplaces, a marble staircase and hardwood plank floors. At $35 million, it’s among the ranks of the most costly pieces of real estate in the city.

“Running is a big question mark that’s there each and every day. It asks you, ‘Are you going to be a wimp or are you going to be strong this day?’” - Peter Maher

We are all wimps about something. For some, it’s maybe spiders, or snakes. One of the girls in my office won’t go anywhere near any kind of bug. Makes living in Iowa a tiny bit of a challenge (good thing she doesn’t live in Florida with the “palmetto bugs” (aka cockroaches)!

I’m wimpy about flying. It’s not my favorite thing to do - stuck in a box flying through the air at 30,000 feet in the air at a speed of over 500 miles an hour. Makes me nuts just to think of it.

But most things I’m not a wimp about. I love public talking, and I do it well. I am not afraid to speak to strange people, don’t mind most bugs, and I have the ability to deal with stray animals (carefully). I believ that being strong is a matter of “mind over matter.”

I’m also a whole lot less of a wimp at 60 than I was even at 50.  Life is a gamble; we don’t know how much time we’ve, so why not care about it.  I’m not planning on bungee jumping or sky diving, but maybe some day….

What do you think? What are you wimpy about? What are you strong about?

This slideshow I found defines what a productive worker is in an Enterprise 2.0 setting. It actually expresses many of the other ideas we’ve discussed here at Pimp Your Work, about how productivity is more about the outcome/results you deliver, rather than the time you log.

Darren Rowse recently wrote about batch processing over at Problogger, and other bloggers have done the same.  This got me thinking about an overlooked way to dealing with an overwhelming amount of tasks everyday.

So what’s batch processing?

Although initially used as a personal term, batch processing is also used to describe a productive way of handling several tasks.

Basically, it’s about grouping and queuing your related tasks together and doing them at a scheduled time - as opposed to doing them in real-time (whenever they arrive) or whenever you remember them.

This idea works really well for both the workplace and your home.

Here are some work tasks you can do in batches:

Email - I’m ruthless when it comes to checking email.  The trick is to deal with it once or twice a day (depending on how many emails you get), and not as they come in.  Sometimes your email client makes a graphic or sound notification along the lines of “You have mail!” and if you’re like me, you’re itching to check it.  Here’s the thing: don’t.  Why?  It could be nonsense, spam, or something that’s superior read when you’re not busy.

It’s much easier to batch your email processing if you turn off any real-time notifications about received email.

Social networking -  No, spending all day on Facebook is not the same as ‘expanding your business contact list’.  If you’re really keen on social networking, make time for it - say an hour each day, rather than running to Facebook each half hour or so.  By doing the latter, you’re more apt to spend more time on it than you should.

Reading RSS feeds - I read my RSS feeds each morning and every night.  I want to do it just once a day, but I’m still working my way out of that addiction.  Again, the point of getting a feed reader in the first place is that you’ll be able to read updates from your favorite websites whenever you like - not as they’re updated.

Organizational tasks - I check and update my to-do lists every morning, and each evening I make sure that my to-do list is complete for the following day.  I also input my financial information (income and daily expenses) once a day instead of every time I make a purchase.

Other things you can do in batches:

Laundry - Instead of doing your laundry multiple times a week, it’s much simpler to do it whenever you’ve got a massive batch of laundry to do.  My personal cue for doing laundry is whenever my large laundry basket is full.  This means I only wash clothes once every two weeks.

Cooking - I’m a huge fan of batch cooking, although I don’t do it all the time. Basically, the trick is to prepare food for the rest of the week on one day, stick ‘em in the freezer, and just heat them up each time you need to eat.  Here’s a very informative article on batch cooking.

Have you tried batch processing?  What tasks do you do in batches?  Does it make you more productive?

I confess; I’m a confirmed choc-o-holic. I blame my mother; the only way she could get me to drink milk was to put chocolate syrup in it. Remember?

I’m convinced that chocolate is the perfect food. I am certain that it is also a healthy food. We’ve all heard about the benefits of dark chocolate, right? And the gourmet chocolate industry is doing well.

Now we have “healthy chocolate.” So, can you make a living from home making/selling chocolate? Well…. that might be difficult. There are MLM (multi-level-marketing; i.e., pyramid scheme) promoters out there who want you to join them in making millions with chocolate. But can that really be possible?

Let’s state you found a wonderful recipe for chocolate. Where would you sell your chocolate? (1) At the small independent grocer? (possibly); (2) at the large national or regional chain? (much more difficult); (3) at local venues like farmer’s markets, flea markets, fairs, festivals (tougher yet, because you have to work weekends, in all kinds of weather. Not in the Midwest, thank you.

But many people are touting chocolate as a great business to start, including Entrepreneur Magazine, USAToday, and Business Week. Here’s a very comprehensive list of chocolate companies.

To begin, maybe you would want to go to the Ecole Chocolat, which can prepare you to become a Master Chocolatier (online!) in a couple of months.

One possibility might be a themed gift basket business, like the idea discussed on HomeBizNotes, with chocolate treats as the featured attraction. Or think about ice cream, like a Baskin-Robbins franchise. Or a Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory franchise. (But read carefully and check out the franchisor before you buy.)

What other ways could you incorporate a love of chocolate into a great baby boomer business?

A new study reveals the chemical in chocolate that produces known heart-healthy benefits. The research found that epicatechin, one of a group of chemicals known as flavanols, is directly linked to improved circulation and other hallmarks of cardiovascular health. The discovery was detailed in the Jan. 16 on the web issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

The flooding in Vinton, Iowa has really hit home (literally) for me. My husband and I lived there until two years ago, in a beautiful Victorian. The town has been hit with disastrous flooding this week, and the whole town is without power.

The white building on the bottom right is our favorite Chinese restaurant. No “Happy Family” being cooked tonight.  That’s the beautiful county courthouse in the middle - kind of reminds me of the courthouse in Back to the Future.  We’re living in Cedar Rapids now, which is also being hit hard by flooding.  Most of the downtown is under water; Governer Chet Culver called this a “500-year flood.”  Wow!

If you want to donate to help the people affected by the tornados and storms and flooding in Iowa and elsewhere around the Midwest, I’d recommend donating to the American Red Cross disaster relief fund.
