I’ve been hearing stories of Ted Koppel slashing the prices on his Potomac, Maryland home for a while and have wondered how bad it could possibly be. Finally with the news from the NY Post that the former “Nightline” host cut the price again I had to check it out. Koppel first put the home on the market in 2005 for $4.1 million and has now cut the price by over half. What’s so bad about it? Let’s investigate. The six-bedroom contemporary home has nearly 9,000 square feet and includes an indoor pool, a sauna, and maid’s quarters. Sounds great right? The home was built in 1968 and seems to be showing its age. There’s nothing particularly wrong with the home, it just seems dated from the brick fireplaces to the track lighting. Ted’s home has potential though and I think some more modern furnishings could make this into a showplace. At $1.79 million, it’s a lot of space for your money.

Here’s some information on what Accion is doing in Asia:
Asia is one of the most impoverished regions in the world with over 65% of the population, or 2 billion people, living on less than $2 a day. In South Asia, the poorest sub-region, 85% of the population live on less than $2 a day and more than 500 million people are in a state of absolute deprivation with no access to clean drinking water, safe housing, or protection from diseases. In 2005, South Asia’s average GDP per capita was a meager $691 and is declining. Asia is a large potential market for microfinance as the informal sector constitutes, on average, 30-40% of GDP, and yet, in most countries in this region, microfinance reaches less than one percent of the population.*
A Highlight of ACCION’s Work in Asia:
Reaching scale rapidly in microfinance is critical to extending access to reliable, affordable credit to the poor. To realize this goal, ACCION is recruiting local staff and partnering with local institutions to adapt our microfinance model to the needs of Indian and Chinese microentrepreneurs. ACCION is also in negotiations to register the Inner Mongolia Micro-Credit Company (IMCC) in the prefecture of Chifeng – population 5 million. ACCION’s business plan calls for developing three loan products tailored to the working capital needs of urban, rural and small business clients in Inner Mongolia.

To continue on our theme of donating, here’s a vocabulary game you can plan which will provide donations to end world hunger:
For every word meaning you get right, 20 grains of rice are donated through the UN to end world hunger. Here’s the link: http://freerice.com/index.php
If you’re a words person like I’m, I’m betting you’ll become addicted, like I was. That’s ok; this is one addiction that is helpful

Accion works in many countries around the world. Here are just a few examples of their projects:
In Africa:
EB-ACCION Savings & Loan, a unique microfinance partnership between ACCION and West Africa’s principal regional bank, Ecobank, has received its license to start microfinance operations in Ghana. Forty-three EB-ACCION staff are poised to deliver microcredit, savings and microinsurance products in the country’s capital, Accra, helping small merchants, manufacturers and other microentrepreneurs to develop their businesses.
EB-ACCION, whose Ghana launch is the first step in what is anticipated to be a regional West African microfinance initiative with Ecobank, will begin operations on April 1st, serving clients through two branches in the busy Accra marketplaces of Tudu and Lapaz. Two additional branches are scheduled to open in Accra later this year.
