The price of crude oil did get lower this week, but gas prices are still over $4.00/gallon in most areas in the US.

The thing is, rising gas prices lead to stress, and stress leads to worry, and worry leads people to become unproductive - according to Yoda.  (Well, not really, but I hope you get it anyway.)

Statistical research conducted by Professor Wayne Hochwarter of Florida State University’s College of Business shows that the rising cost of petroleum can have a negative effect on employee productivity. He conducted a similar study two years ago, but with only 300 respondents. Nevertheless, the results are roughly the same.

This spring, he conducted a survey of 800 full-time employees.  Here are some of his main findings from his most current survey (emphasis mine):

  • 52 percent have reconsidered taking vacations or other recreational activities;
  • 45 percent have had to cut back on debt-reduction payments, such as credit card payments;
  • Nearly 30 percent considered the consequences of going without basics including food, clothing and medicine;
  • 45 percent report that the escalating gas prices have “caused them to fall behind financially”;
  • 39 percent concurred with the statement “Gas prices have decreased my standard of living”; and
  • About 33 percent — or one in three — stated they would quit their job for a comparable one nearer to home.

Help files. HTML codes. Documents you need to cut and paste. These are just a few of the examples of windows you would always want to be visible. But because not all programs natively support the always visible feature, you can easily lose them when dealing with many windows. PushPin solves this age-old problem by adding an “Always on top” choice in the windows menu, ready at your disposal.

This small program is ready out of the box - there is no setup involved. Just extract the zip file and run the program. The menu item is automatically added and once you activate the feature, that window will remain in full view regardless of window focus shifts. Pretty cool, huh?

You save time with PushPin instead of using the Alt-Tab function just to bring a window you really need back at front. To deactivate the program, just right click on the icon in the taskbar and choose Remove.
Overall, PushPin is a light and easy application that does its job flawlessly. And the ideal news of all – it’s available for free.

While the internet site lists that this utility is for Windows 95/98 and NT4 only, the program also ran on Windows XP.

There aren’t too many chances to own your own island in Montana. This estate is on a private island in Whitefish Lake and sits on 10 acres with over 2600 waterfront feet. The home is a custom 7,554 square foot home with three bedrooms, an attached guest apartment, attached oversized two-car garage plus a separate three-car oversized garage with space upstairs for a work room. The interior has a beautiful log cabin style and seems to be the ideal place to retreat from the world. It appears to be the home of State Senator Dan Weinberg who announced in December he wasn’t seeking reelection. This home is listed at $17 million.

Do you sometimes feel like a pet hamster running around the same exercise wheel day in and day out?  It might be exciting at first, but you’ll get bored eventually.  Don’t worry - boredom at work doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to switch jobs or get a promotion.  There are some easy things you can do to make monotony and uniformity go away.

Add variety to your work tasks.  If it’s always report-meeting-business call repeated ad infinitum, you’d definitely get bored. Try to find a way to get different types of work/projects for yourself, rather than settling for what you’re used to.  Apart from showing your versatility, this also prevents work from being monotonous.

Matt Elliot over at YWorking has a related tip: don’t delegate all of your creative tasks. A quote from that article:

Often, you’re forced by a time crunch to step away from that sort of work for a while, but don’t make that a permanent thing. Whenever you get a chance, step back into the creative realm and remind yourself what it feels like. Your own professional morale just might depend on it.

Be creative with your breaks.  If you work in a strict business environment, odds are it’s hard to input some random activities into your workday. Since your working hours are a routine, don’t let your breaks fall into the same pattern.  Apart from eating a different snack or going someplace else for lunch, here are some alternate activities you might want to consider:

  • Drop by a park or museum for the rest of your break and just walk leisurely
  • Take a nap
  • Draw cartoons at the back of your business cards (or on the free napkins that go with your coffee during your coffee break)
  • Work on a hobby (I know a guy who works on his diorama models whenever he’d get a break at work.)

Get a dose of humor and play.  From reading the latest Dilbert comic strip to sharing a good joke in the employee lounge, it’s easy to include humor in the workplace - unless you’re working with the Borg.  Also, you can turn basic elements of office life into play.  Play in the office can range from aiming garbage at your wastebasket a la basketball, to a full-on office sportsfest.  Having both good-natured humor and an element of play in the office not only boosts camaraderie and morale, it also helps improve creativity among employees.

Change your environment.  If you’re facing a blank wall all day, then of course you’ll be bored.  Take advantage of mobile technology (laptops and Wi-Fi, for example) and work in a different area in the building.  Of course, you might risk looking like you’re missing in action, so notify your supervisors and colleagues about your whereabouts.

If it’s still impossible for you to leave your workstation, try to make some changes with the decor.  Add a tiny “shrine” of trinkets that’ll motivate/inspire you.  A plant or a rock garden might even help.  Or sometimes, even a easy furniture rearrangement can do the trick.

Know that adding ’spice to your worklife’ doesn’t have to be big.  You don’t necessarily have to write a formal proposal to your boss about how to include “fun” in the workplace.  Sometimes, all it takes is some easy, baby steps to add a dash of excitement and unpredictability to your work.
