CNBC recently released a ranking of U.S. states as to their competitiveness and top states in which to do business.  CNBC used ten weighted categories and combined rankings for all categories to get an overall ranking.

The categories were (in order of most to least weight): cost of doing business (taxes), work force, economy (”solid” - whatever that means - and diversity of industries), education, quality of life, technology and innovation, transportation, cost of living, business friendliness (regulations), and access to capital.

I commented in my About.com blog that I disagreed with the weighting.   Access to capital is a heck of a lot more important than quality of life.  Sure, I want a great life while I’m running my business, but if I can’t get a lender to give me money, I’m not going to care about quality of life.  For example, Alaska and Hawaii were last.  While Hawaii had a great rating on “quality of life,” it was low on most other factors; it was 49th and 50th on cost of living and business friendliness.

What do you think of the ranking?  What factor/s do you think are mis-represented? Do you agree with your state’s ranking?

I love to travel, and I’ve many places I want to see and experience.  So I have been exploring possibilities.  They’re limited only by your imagination.  Do you want to:

  • Go fishing,  hiking, golfing, boating, hot air ballooning?
  • Learn some history, literature, religion, photography?
  • See a festival, play, or musical event?
  • Enjoy a dude ranch, a cruise, or an eco-adventure?
  • Have an extreme hiking, skiing, rafting, canoing adventure?
  • Stay in a castle?  Or a hostel?

Over the next few weeks, I’ll show you some fun and unusual vacation websites I’ve found.  I have not been on any of these tours or experiences, so I’m not making suggestions on anything.  If you want more information on any of these places, do your research.

To help you choose, here are a few questions you might want to ask yourself:

  • What time of year do I like to travel?  If you are retired, you can take trips any time, not just in the summer.  Rates are lower in the spring and fall, and if you want to travel over the holidays you may find some good deals.
  • What level of luxury do you demand and can pay for?  Some people are happy with budget, others like good accommodations (nice hotels), while still others demand luxury.  My husband and I like very good to excellent, but we can’t afford the luxury stuff.
  • What kind of places do you like to stay in?  Do you prefer Bed and Breakfast Inns, motels, large chain hotels?
  • Do you want to travel independently or do you prefer group travel?  This may depend on the country, of course.  If I were traveling in China, for example, I’d want to be with a group, but in most places in Europe, I would feel comfortable going on my own.
  • Do you’ve special needs - dietary, disability, etc?  You can find tours and special accommodations for whatever need you have.  I’ll do a post on these later this month.

What else would you put on your list for travel stipulations?

Last time I checked out a home in the Tiburon area for a look at the most expensive zip codes, the top home in the area was listed at $38.5 million. Since then that same house has climbed to $44 million and the top of the market has seen a few more lavish homes such as today’s estate listed.

The Tiburon peninsula lends itself to beautiful properties that make the ideal of the views in the San Francisco Bay area. This one, called Paradise by the Bay turns its approximately 6.8 acres into a charming family compound. This luxury estate has been in the same family since 1926. The estate includes a five-bedroom main home, three outbuildings, a championship tennis court, pool, children’s playground, and scenic waterfront area in a secluded cover.

The main home has water views from the dining room, kitchen, master suite and living room. The lower level media/family room opens to the lawn area. There’s a patio room that has been historically enjoyed as an area to entertain and host noted musicians. Other features include an office which is situated adjacent to the main home, overlooking the gardens and distant Ring Mountain. The lower deck “cottage” is an ideal guest retreat overlooks the water and opens to a deck.

The small pool is surrounded by grass and also has a cabana and bar designed for amusing and resting by the pool. This area is accessible by a private road for the catering staff. The massage sanctuary is a private massage deck that allows one to hear the lapping of the water and enjoy complete serenity while getting a massage. You can also enjoy veggies from your own organic gardens or send the children off to play in the children’s play area with sand box. In fact the property is so rambling that the pathways are marked with cute signs pointing the way to different areas. This property is listed at $22.6 million.

For more prime properties and lush locations, see Luxury Homes and Mansions.

When dealing with huge number of files and an equally big amount of folders, getting your hands on important files can take precious time. Index Your Files aims to speed up and simplify that process by the use of indexing.

The software doesn’t need any installation – it’s ready to use once downloaded and extracted. When first run, the program will ask you if you want to create a database. The database refers to the set of files you would want to index.

Though the interface might look overwhelming for beginners, a short step-by-step instruction is available in the Help option. Once you have a database, you can go start searching for files.

Searching is a fairly straightforward process. How fast it conducts the search varies and depends on how deep your search parameter is. It took the application just a fraction of a second to search for files with a certain extension through an index with 37,000 files while a more specific search took longer.

It may be a bit daunting at first, but once you get the hang of using Index Your File, searching for those important files will be a whole lot easier.

Index Your Files is compatible with Win95/98/NT/2000/XP/Vista.
