Jeff Thredgold is an economic consultant who has been writing a weekly column (now online) called TeaLeaf: Understanding Today’s Economy, since 1976. His column has good information about economics and the economy.

This week his column focused on a list of “Wouldn’t it be nice if…”

My favorite: Wouldn’t it be nice if …
…each long-term member of Congress was required to take a year off, start a new business with limited funding, and then deal with the complexities and hassles THEY have created

True. The rules and regulations stifling small businesses are horrendous. They increase the cost of goods and services while not doing what they are intended to do. Case is point is OSHA, which created by well-meaning legislators and signed into law by President Nixon in 1970.

OSHA is supposed to protect U.S. workers from the big, bad corporations. Now, I will allow that companies took advantage of workers and spent tiny money on safety. Many workers were killed and injured due to employer negligence or downright criminal neglect. But…

OSHA has turned into a bureaucratic nightmare. My favorite craziness is that the code even defines the font size you must use to print out the OSHA poster that must be displayed in your business. How is that helping make the workplace safer?!

I’ll bet if each congressperson had to run a business for two years, they would run screaming back into Congress and throw out all the stupid laws. Or am I dreaming?

olympicsailing_nc.jpgJohn Dane III has overcome a lot, including Hurricane Katrina, to get to the Beijing Olympics.

Dane, who is 58, has a PhD from Tulane and owns a yacht company that was in the path of Hurricane Katrina. He lost both his home and his business in that devastating event. He rebuilt his company, which is more massive and better than ever.

In the meantime, Dane has been trying to get the Olympics for 40 years! Finally, racing with his son-in-law Austin Sperry, he managed to get a berth (couldn’t resist the pun) on the U.S. Sailing Team.

“Austin’s youth, athleticism and enthusiasm coupled with my racing experience and never-say-die attitude make us a great team,” states Dane.

If you want to sell a this home attractive, why not also make a little money using it in film shoots. Today’s home in Upper Brookville,NY was recently used in two episodes of the trendy TV show “Gossip Girl” but has a scandalous past all its own. It will be showcased in the upcoming season which will include scenes from a “white party.” The home has also been used in a Kohl’s commercial and Ludacris filmed an AT &T commercial in June. The home is certainly party ready with a foyer with dual wraparound staircases perfect for dramatic descents, a 65-foot ballroom, a gym and a saltwater swimming pool that sits in a greenhouse-like glass enclosure. The five-bedroom home is on five acres which back up to an arboretum.

This estate may also be familiar to long-time readers of this column, in fact it was an estate of the day in 2007. That’s when the home was seized as part of “Operation VIN City,” an 18-month investigation that busted up the largest stolen car ring on the East Coast. It was the home of ringleader Michael Pescatore and was sold at auction by the Treasury Department on March 22. Real estate agent Kim Greenberg and her fiancé, real estate developer, Fred Rudd picked up the home for $8.3 million which is pretty close to what two sharp commenters guessed it would go for in my 2007 post.. Now it’s all prettied up and on the market for $12.9 million.

I usually save Ann Brenoff’s Hot Property column in the L.A. Times for the Sunday Real Estate Round-Up but this is too interesting not to share as soon as possible. Donald Trump has offered to step in and purchase Ed McMahon’s Beverly Hills home and grant McMahon to continue living there. Trump stated in an interview with the Times that although he didn’t know McMahon personally he grew up watching him on TV and felt that it was an honor to step in and help.

McMahon who is 85 and suffered a debilitating neck injury last year was facing foreclosure within two weeks on his Beverly Hills home. McMahon bought the home in 1990 for $2.6 million and has had it on the market for several years. Most recently it was listed at $4.6 million as shown in the Hilton & Hyland listing. McMahon had defaulted on $4.8 million in mortgage loans with Countrywide Financial Corp.

Trump isn’t giving McMahon a free ride. He plans to purchase the home from the lender and lease it back to McMahon. According to the Times, McMahon’s listing agent, Alex Davis of Hilton & Hyland flew to New York to make a personal pitch to Trump to save McMahon’s home.
