If you like Brooke Astor’s New York City apartment, be prepared to swoon over Holly Hill. The property in Briarcliff Manor, New York is everything you’d anticipate of Mrs. Astor’s country abode. Max Abelson of the New York Observer’s Manhattan Transfers recently took the tour with real estate broker David Turner.

The home is on 64.6 acres that include a four-bedroom gardener’s cottage, a chauffeur’s apartment atop a five-bay carriage house, an ancient pump house, barn with a three-car garage, a small museum, greenhouse, root cellar, pet cemetery, cutting gardens and something called the Love Temple. The land can be subdivided and developed.

The main house is a 1927 stone manor designed by architect William Delano. It has six marble fireplaces and 13 bedrooms, including staff quarters. The home has an elegant marble foyer, 42-foot-long parquet-floored drawing room, a sun room, an indoor pool and a beautiful library. Other rooms include the photograph-covered Memory Room; the Cardinal’s Room with telegrams from the Vatican on the wall and of course a large master suite. This home is listed at $12.9 million.

Of course you already known that Hugh Jackman is one lucky man. The genetically-blessed Aussie has a thriving career and a lovely life. But my envy certainly spiked an octave when I learned that Jackman had picked up one of my favorite New York City estate of the days. This expansive triplex in the Perry Street building designed by Richard Meier has beautiful Hudson River views and over 11,000 square feet of space. Sun Microsystems co-founder Bill Joy bought the raw space in 2002 for $17.57 million and put the home up for sale last November for $40 million. The home on the eighth, ninth and 10th floors has a massive double-height living room, gourmet kitchen, huge dining room, a large recreation room and a small wine cellar. There are five bedrooms total including a master bedroom with an exercise area, bath, sauna and dressing areas. Each floor has a terrace and the most amazing feature of the home is the dramatic swirled staircase.

Jackman got himself a deal too. The New York Observer’s sources state that the final sales price was between $20 and $23 million which is even lower than the $25 million or so it was originally rumored that he was paying. The NY Post says the triplex went for $21 million. Either way, Bill Joy likely didn’t make a lot of money off this deal.

I’m not sure if today’s home belongs to a sports star but the indoor basketball court with the Chicago Bulls logo in this home in Burr Ridge, Illinois does make me wonder. In addition to six bedrooms the over 20,000 square foot home home also has an indoor swimming pool, locker room, spa, sauna, home theater, elevator, two kitchens, an outdoor patio and pond with a large fountain (even more pictures at the virtual tour here). It is listed at $8,999,999.

Singer and current Dancing With The Stars contestant Lance Bass is pretty serious about getting rid of his Beverly Hills Post Office area home this go round. Yes, that’s right, as the Real Estalker reports this isn’t Bass’s first trip to the real estate rodeo. He put this home on the market first back in 2006 for $5.25 million (check out the original house tour from back then here). He bought the home in 2003 for $3.88 million so at that price he was poised to make a tidy profit. The home didn’t sell and now he has put the home with the guest house and two pools up for sale at a price that is whisper close to his original purchase price. Why? The Real Estalker’s commenters dish that he already has his eye on a new bigger home. The over-one-acre property has great views and lots of space in fact it seems like too much space for only one man. While the decor is a bit off-kilter and downright florid in places there are things to love, like the skylight in the kitchen and the many terraces and balconies with fantastic views. The guest house, perched neatly next to the pool is almost more appealing than the main house. There’s also a separate gym which has its own lavatory. This home is listed at $3.925 million.

Last week’s LA Times Hot Property column led me to the beachside home of Roy Schlobohm, whose dad founded the famed bra and lingerie manufacturing company, Shirley of Hollywood. Scholobohm has listed his Malibu beach home at $13.3 million and it’s worth a long look if only for the verdant lawn all that glorrious beachfront. This property on Pacific Coast Highway is a bit up the coast in a secluded part of Malibu, away from the major clog of traffic. The layout is a bit weird, there are two houses with two bedrooms each, a main home and a guest house. Walls of glass make the ocean part of your daily life. The current decor is also interesting, the white and shiny contemporary house has been enlivened with animal prints and exotic art. This home is listed at $13.3 million.
